    Students head back to school

Class is back in session at Meridian Public Schools. Nearly six thousand kids filed back into the hallways after a hot, 2-month summer vacation. “Here at Meridian High School it’s been an awesome first day. The kids have come in already knowing our expectations,” said Principal Victor Hubbard. Yesterday was all about greetings and introductions, going over the syllabus, and laying out the classroom rules. “We always have new expectations for our students. One of those expe

Mural to cover vandalized wall at Meridian High School

Meridian High School and supporters are quickly rebuilding after school property was vandalized last Friday. “When we first all heard about it Saturday morning, our first reaction was us being infuriated,” said Renuka Srivastava, who graduated from MHS last year. 19-year-old Jordan Wolfe and a 16-year-old MHS student smashed glass doors and windows, broke into a fire extinguisher case, and spray painted racist graffiti on walls. Both have been charged. “We could not believe

The City of Meridian is looking to hire Meridian High School seniors. Mayor Percy Bland stopped by the school yesterday, encouraging students to apply. “They can work in any of our departments. They’re mentored by someone in that department,” said Bland. The job opportunity is a part of the Graduate Advancement Program, also known as GAP. The purpose of the program is to expose students to a work environment that will help them develop life skills through employment. “They’

MHS athletes sign with college teams

Two Meridian High School seniors have signed with college sports teams. Cassidy Hines will play soccer at Belhaven University and Kai Horne will run track at Millsaps College. “It feels pretty good. I was kind of nervous at first coming up here signing in front of everybody. But Belhaven is the place for me to be and it’s home, so I’m very excited to go there,” said Hines. “I’m just really excited. The day finally came. I finally found the school of my dreams. I’m reall

MHS Freshmen get ‘reality check’ during financial literacy fair

Today during an educational exercise on financial literacy, ninth grade students at Meridian High School came face-to-face with reality. They got an eye-opener about just how important it is to receive an education. “Students were hand-issued a paper and they did not get to pick. They were given a job. They were told if they graduated from high school or did not graduate from high school. Some were dropouts; some went to college. They found out if they’re married or not m

Meridian Wildcat car tags now available

Meridian Public Schools are back in session…and residents can show their school support with a new Wildcats car tag. “When you go purchase your car tag, you add an additional $31 on to your fees for the car tag,” said Calvin Hampton, the head football coach at Meridian High School. To purchase a car tag, residents must submit an application through the Meridian Public School District website. The district needs at least 300 pre-ordered car tags before they can be produced. “

    MHS student receives scholarship

Simone Amos, a senior at Meridian High School, received quite a surprise today during class. She had no idea that she would be the winner of a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by get2college. “I’m really excited because I’ve been following them on Instagram. I counted down yesterday, and I think they gave away 19 scholarships so far. So I was like ok, hopefully I’m still in the category of getting a scholarship.” The get2college organization awards scholarships to Mississippi
