Meridian’s Nickelodeon Worldwide Day of Play coming this Saturday

Kids will be encouraged to turn off the TV and head outside this weekend. The City of Meridian and the Boys and Girls Club are hosting a Nickelodeon Worldwide Day of Play.

Nickelodeon Worldwide Day of Play is a day designed to get kids more active.

“Nickelodeon does this every year. They shut down programming on the TV. No kids are allowed to stay in the house. They have little commercials that will tell the kids ‘get up, go out, go run, jump, and fly a kite,’” said Parks and Recreation Supervisor Aleasha Jordan.

The free event will be this Saturday at Highland Park from 10 a.m. to 2p.m. There will be all types of activities.

“We’ll have games, water slides, the splash pad, the carousel will be open for free rides. We have cotton candy. Everything you can think of. We have carnival style games where you can win great prizes. It’s just going to be a good day of fun,” said Jordan.

The City of Meridian and the Boys and Girls Club are expecting a crowd of at least 2,000 people. Jordan explained why the event will be great for kids.

“Once they get outside and get that fresh air and the sun on them, I think that the kids will be like, ‘Aw I want to go back outside. I’m having fun.’ It gives them a chance to see that being outside and having fun is a great thing for their bodies.”
