Butler police searching for arsonist after Zack Rogers Park fire

Sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning, the Zack Rogers Park was set on fire. The Butler, Alabama, police department is looking for who’s responsible.

“Whenever we can find out who did this, we will charge them with criminal mischief in the first degree and also arson,” said Police Chief Jimmy Huckeba.

Sunday morning, a policeman on duty drove by the park and saw it was on fire. He alerted the fire department, who quickly came and put out the flames.

The police chief says the park was paid for with grant money. The fire caused at least $50,000 worth of damage. The suspect or suspects also tried to burn parts of the boy’s bathroom.

“One reason we feel so much about this is because this is Choctaw County’s park. Whoever did this…to me it was cowardly act. It did not just hurt the town of butler, it hurt Choctaw County,” said Huckeba.

The concession stand and other structures in the park were also targeted. Police believe the suspect or suspects entered the park through a back entrance, instead of the park’s front gate.

“We shut the gate at 9:00 every night depending on if it’s ball season. It was closed at 9:00

Saturday night,” said Huckeba.

The police department is asking for the public’s help.

“At this time we do not have any leads. There are a few things we’re following up on. We’re hoping we’ll come up with something. We are offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. You can remain anonymous. Anybody that knows anything, I’m asking them to call my office at 205-459-3794,” said Huckeba.

The Zack Rogers park will remain closed to the public at this this time, as police continue to investigate the case.
