Residents can now show their support for animals by purchasing an “I Care for Animals” car tag.
“These car tags can be purchased at your local tax collector’s office. The money from the purchase of the car tags is awarded to animal shelters throughout the state of Mississippi,” said Rocky Rockette, executive director of Lauderdale County Animal Control.
The money will cover spaying and neutering procedures, which Rockette said will help decrease the number of animals that do not have homes.
“In previous years, we have dealt with 3,000 to 4,000 animals that come through this facility, with an adoption rate of 30 percent. Our euthanasia rate is extremely high. We’re trying to do everything we can to decrease those numbers.”
Residents can even help in designing the car tag.
“We got word that car tag sales are down. Some people have expressed concern that the current design of the car tags is not appeasing to them. They are considering changing the car tag design. If you have any ideas, you can contact me at my office,” said Rockette.
