Meridian Housing Authority awards scholarships to Meridian High graduates
The Meridian Housing Authority is helping students go to college. Yesterday, the authority gave away over $150,000 in scholarships.
“They can spread their wings, obtain higher goals, and move to success in their lives,” said Wilbert Jones, one of the housing authority’s board of commissioners.
The money was issued to 15 qualified public housing residents, all of whom will graduate from Meridian High school this Friday. Family and friends gathered for the scholarship ceremony at MCC Magnolia Hall.
“Our students have excelled in the classrooms and have excelled on standardized tests. They have high GPAs, high SAT scores, and we’re just very excited,” said Jones.
Majority of the funding came from an endowment started by one of the housing authority’s board of commissioners, Jeanelle Kidd. Two of the students received full scholarships.
“I feel blessed to receive this scholarship because I know now that I can go to college and finish school for the whole four years and come back with a degree to help my community,” said Tybresha Glass.
“I’m absolutely relieved to know that I can go to college, become a better person in college, and become the athletic trainer that I want to be,” said Trayana Carter.
The keynote speaker Judge Veldore Young-Graham gave the graduates a few words of advice.
“I hope that they received that it’s ok to be themselves. They don’t have to be like anybody else. They can soar with who they are right where they are.”
