Meridian regional health office will soon close

The Mississippi State Department of Health is closing its regional office here in Meridian. It’s one of six regional offices that are being closed due to budget cuts effective July 1st.

The agency is one of several Mississippi government agencies experiencing budget cuts because state tax collections have fallen short of expectations for the past two years.

“With this reduction, we’re not closing any health departments. We’re not decreasing the hours of any health departments. We’re taking cuts in our central office that use state funds,” said MSDH State Health Officer Dr. Mary Currier.

As a result, some jobs are being reduced through retirements, resignations, and reassignments. No layoffs are expected in county health clinics or the three remaining district offices in Tupelo, Jackson, and Biloxi.

Officials say the closures will save the agency $1.5 million in administrative overhead. They add that the closures should not affect health services available to the public.
