The 31st Annual Sunfish Triathlon

The 31st Annual Sunfish Triathlon will be held at Bonita Lakes Park in Meridian this weekend.

Race Director Lora Kennedy says, “This weekend we are hosting the 31st annual sunfish triathlon. It’s held here at Bonita Lakes. It’s a 1/3rd of a mile swim, a 16-and-a-half-mile bike ride, and a 5k run.”

She expects there to be around 300 entrants from all over the United States.

“We have triathletes from all over the united states. We have athletes come in from as far as Tennessee, Louisiana, Florida, Alabama.”

For the elite athletes, there isn't just pride on the line if they win.

“We do have awards, but it’s basically for the win. We do give away cash awards for the fastest time. The best swim time, run and bike time.”

She goes on to say that The Sunfish Tri is one of the best triathlons in the state of Mississippi.

“I think it’s a lot of people we have here. The city gets involved with us, it’s a great location.”
