Man dies in officer-involved shooting

A man has died after being shot Friday afternoon in Lauderdale County. The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department says a deputy was involved in the shooting, but no one from law enforcement was hurt.

“At 1:04 [yesterday] afternoon, 911 received a phone call from family on Fred Haguewood Road concerning a younger family member who was claiming to want to do harm to them and then to himself. Deputies were dispatched to that location. The first deputy to the scene, as he exited his patrol vehicle, the individual exited the residence, brandishing a handgun. The officer immediately began giving verbal commands to drop the gun. The subject did not do so. He demonstrated aggressiveness by raising the gun in a threatening manner. The deputy made the decision to protect himself and those that were on scene. He drew his weapon and discharged it, striking the subject,” said Sheriff Billy Sollie.

The man, who deputies say was in his 30s, was then taken by ambulance to the hospital where he later died. The sheriff’s department says the deputy was wearing a body camera and his patrol vehicle was equipped with a dash camera. He has been placed on administrative leave due to standard procedures regarding officer-involved shootings, according to the sheriff’s department. The case has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
