Local team heads to the Little League World Series

The Meridian Babe Ruth Allstars are headed out on their way to Lawrenceburg, TN this afternoon, with hopes of bringing back, a world series trophy. Something that hasn’t been done, since 1998.

“I think we are going to do real well. We are a lot deeper pitching then we were last year, which is the main thing. We were solid last year, but we are deeper and probably a little more solid this year,” says team manager Chuck Butler.

He goes to say what makes this team so much better than last years.

“We’re just deeper pitching. Last year we could only run 2 or 3 guys out there who were capable of getting the job done. But this year we have 4 or 5 quality starters and 2 or 3 guys behind them that will do a good job as well.”

The team, which is composed of 13 to 15-year old’s, that have been playing baseball around Lauderdale County.

“Most of these guys are returning guys. We just picked up a few 15-year old’s but most of these guys are actually 14 year old’s. But, we are playing in a 15-year-old world series. It’s all the 14-year old’s from last year that wanted to go.”

He predicts that this year they could come home, as national champions.

“We did go last year. We were in Iowa last year. We were 2 and 2 in pool play and then we won the consolation game, but we didn’t get to advance in the championship series part. But, I think we are very well equipped to do well this year.”
