LEMA offers safety tips for Hurricane Irma
The Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency is keeping a close eye on Hurricane Irma.
“As of right now, they got it tracking towards Florida. It looks like Mississippi is going to be spared. That’s good for us. I hate it for Florida. Maybe it will dissipate some before it hits landfall. But right now, it looks like Florida will get the brunt of it,” said LEMA Director Scott Spears.
Currently a category five and moving at 175 miles per hour, Irma has already devastated parts of the Caribbean and is predicted to hit Florida Sunday afternoon. But spears said it’s still too early to tell how the hurricane will affect local areas.
“Depending on which way it shifts, if it shifts any, we could still get some heavy rains from it. We could still get some winds from it.”
Even if Irma doesn’t pass through, Spears said the storm could impact local fuel deliveries and may bring evacuees. He advised residents to be prepared just in case the storm hits.
“Keep up with you weather forecast, so you’ll know what’s coming your way. It’s always good to have at least a two-weeks supply non-perishable food items, first-aid supplies. Make sure you have your medications, some cash, any equipment you think you may need, power saws, generators.”
