The track and field coaching staff at Meridian High, had a small ceremony, where the womens 4x800 meter relay and the mens open 800m champion, all received their state championship rings.
“We are having a ring ceremony for our 4x800 meter champions, and our individual 800m champion,” says coach Regonal Walker.
“Well, coming into the season, we didn’t really know what we had. Me and the coaches, we put our heads together. We put together a plan, we worked it out and it flourished.”
He goes on to say that although the team is young, they were still able to complete high marks.
“We had a lot of kids that were new to track and field. A lot of kids that were inexperienced. A lot of kids that were very young and underdeveloped. We got in the weight room, we put in the time and in the end it worked out.” And it worked out so well, that the school produced 5 state championship athletes.
“And to be honest, we left a lot out there. We had a lot of kids that finished second and third at state. It just shows that when you put in the time, work and effort, something good will come out of it.”
The team is looking forward to winning again next year.
