More College For Kids fun and why MCC does it
For the past twenty years, Meridian Community College has put on a program called College For Kids. This year, the program has almost 40 diverse classes for children ages 6 to 12 to engage in, in order to stimulate their brains during the summer and to also simply, have fun.
“They’re having a lot of fun, and they enjoy it so much. They don’t even realize that they’re learning while they do that, but it does help them stay stimulated and keep them learning even if they’re not actually conscious of that.” -Joy Smith, Continuing Education Coord., MCC

The classes, while some have stayed the same throughout the years and some are new, can range from fossil digging and learning about dinosaurs..
“Well, I just like scary movies, and dinosaurs are actually scary to me and so I just thought since dinosaurs are scary and I like the scary.” -Vivian Dowlang, student
To Hair, Nails, and More, in which the kids learn how to paint nails and style hair.
“Because I like to do hair because I do my sister’s hair a lot and I like painting peoples’ nails.” -Katheryn Chatham, student

Though this is a way for kids to learn and have fun, this is also a way for MCC to become familiar with the children and for the children to become familiar with MCC.
“Because they’re a member of our community and we want them to become familiar and comfortable here on our Meridian Community College campus. We want them to feel at home here, and we hope that one day they’ll come to us when they’re ready to start their higher education.” -Smith
