VA mobile service visits DAV chapter in Meridian

Meridian, Miss. - The Disabled American Veterans Mobile Service Office made their way to the Meridian DAV Chapter 56 earlier today.

“We try to accompany the areas that’s further away from the VA region office. So, we try to come by and hit the remote areas that’s further away from it. We do this twice a year. We do it in the fall and we do it in the spring as well.” said Corbert Young, supervisor, DAV in Jackson, Mississippi.

This veteran mobile service provides status on claims of veterans they represent, and they also file claims for these veterans and their spouses or child. They also inform the veterans what benefits they may be entitled to if they don’t already know.

“Based on a certain disability rate that the veteran may be entitled to, they have what they call education assistance for the spouse. So, any time of compensation that the veteran might not be aware of, we actually try to bring that awareness to the veteran or the surviving spouse or child for the benefits that they may not be aware of.” Young added.

One veteran who is with Chapter 56 here in Meridian volunteers her time to help veterans and their families in the area, in her own way. Pattie Lindner operates a food pantry for honorably- discharged veterans and widows of honorably discharged veterans.

“Right now it’s running short, and I’m hoping to refill it as much as possible. I rely on donations only. Hopefully before Christmas it’ll be filled up so that we can do what we do every year. We feed between thirty to fifty families at Christmas time.” Pattie Lind said.
