Mike Espy makes final stop through Meridian before runoff

The Mississippi senate race that has caught national attention is heating up as voters go to the polls tomorrow. Both candidates are making their final efforts to reach voters, including those here in Meridian.

In a race that has seen split among Republican and Democratic voters, former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy and Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith are making their final appearances before tomorrow’s runoff.

“I have experience as a member of congress. In 1986, 1988, 1990, and elected in 1992—I represented everybody. That’s why I went from 11% of the white vote to 40% of the white vote. Now, also, she is a woman, and, of course, I don’t mind running against a woman, but what I’m saying to you is not every woman is for women.” -Espy

Espy has been joined not only by local officials, but by Congress member-elect Ayanna Pressley.

“It’s really a testament to the crossroads that we are at as a country, where it does seem we are drinking from a fire hose daily of insult and assault.” -Pressley

“I’m glad to be back here in Meridian. I’ve been here multiple times. For those who came even during inclement weather, the enthusiasm was amazing. They were passionate, and I think they’re really going to turn out to vote. That’s really what all this is about.” -Espy
