Choctaw Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America holds annual Pinewood Derby Race

Over the weekend, Bonita Lakes Mall was surrounded with Boy Scouts and supportive families rooting them on while they participated in the annual Pinewood Derby Race.

“This started back in 1955, not here in Meridian, but Manhattan Beach, California, and it spread all over the country. I know we go back to the 60’s, I’ve been sharing this even for 33 years now.”Said Frank Polizzi Chairman of Pinewood Derby.

This event was free, and only required supporting a good cause.

“There was no monetary fee, however, we did ask some Cub Scouts to bring two canned items and that will go to a local food pantry, so it teaches them a little bit about being involved in the community, along with the fun competition we have.”Said Frank Polizzi Chairman of Pinewood Derby.

Scouts were not left alone to construct their pinewood derby cars.

“It’s amazing what the parents and the cub scouts do together to make these cars, it’s only gravity that pulls it down the track, so they do their homework, now they can go online, get on the internet and learn tricks and tips.”Said Frank Polizzi Chairman of Pinewood Derby.

The race is made up of scouts of varying ages.

“We just had our first tiger cub race for the morning and we had some fast cars, and then there will be second graders which are wolves, third graders which are bears, and fourth and fifth graders which are Webelo Scouts.”Said Frank PolizziChairman of Pinewood Derby.

Parents and the scouts began preparing for the big race by first designing and constructing their Pinewood Derby cars.

“We did a workshop back in January, and we invite all families that are in cub scouts to come out we did it at the Knights of Columbus Hall, they were gracious enough to let us use the hall, we had about 40 people come out and we helped them cut the cars out, we helped them weigh them down.”Said Frank Polizzi Chairman of Pinewood Derby.

Speed may win the race, but judges also allowed scouts to compete for best design.

“The design class is different from the racing class, and we encourage the cub scouts to come up with the design.”Said Frank Polizzi Chairman of Pinewood Derby.
