Lauderdale County School District launches summer reading camp

Northeast and Southeast Elementary Schools have been approved for a summer reading camp grant through The Mississippi Department of Education.

The State of Mississippi has a literacy law that will prevent third grade students from getting promoted to the fourth grade if they do not meet the third-grade reading test requirements. The reading camp will take place during the month of June and students will spend their time engaged in extra reading in small groups to help build their overall reading skills.

“The district has provided intervention and provided additional instruction every summer since that literacy law went into place; however, this is the first time we’ve been able to run this full fledge summer reading camp on the little bit larger scale that we are this summer.” Said Lisa Shelley, Northeast Elementary principal.
