Board of Supervisors moving forward with intent to purchase Village Fair Mall property


Coming in at a price of $1.25 million, the thirty-nine-acre property which currently holds the old Village Fair Mall is set to be purchased by the county. The Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors moved a vote with an intent to buy this property in their latest meeting.

“The mall has been of interest, and we kind of have this analogy of being on this three or four-lane highway of ‘What we do want to do as far as of our courthouse project?’ The mall has always been a part of that, but for some reason or another we just couldn’t find common ground with the owner,” said Board President Jonathan Wells.

In hopes of helping the city further progress with the 22nd Avenue Project, Wells said the first order of business will be demolishing the old mall. “There’s been some other entities to suggest ideas about what that property could be used for, but at the current time, the two things the board has on their mind is to clean up the entrance to our city and a possible courthouse location.” The county has provided in-kind work for the demolition of the old Sears building on 22nd Avenue, and they will use these workers for the old mall demolition as well. While he said the future of the property is unknown, Wells claimed courthouse employees are at the top of their list. “We haven’t gotten that far. Of course, that’s going to be part of the process and part of us doing our due diligence. It definitely secures that option for us to go there, as far as future government facilities.”
