A local football coach had a vision many years ago, and now, hundreds of children in the community are being impacted. Coach Derek Pouncey of West Lauderdale High School joined with Fellowship of Christian Athletes in 2013 to start an annual summer sports camp for the Boys and Girls Club. Coming up on July 17th and 18th at Meridian Community College, these kids will have a chance to learn about football and faith. The first year, around 200 children attended, and they anticipate nearly 500 this year.
“We’ve had the opportunity to see them grow. They’ll come back each year wearing the shirt from the year before. Of course, they love the sports part of it. They love to get out there and have fun and play football, but we get to see kids, also, their lives being impacted for eternity. Last year at camp, we had over thirty kids get saved on the third day of camp,” said FCA Area Director, Jonathan Fulcher. Coach Pouncey passed away in 2014 due to cancer, and the following year the camp was named after him in his honor.
