Ross Collins students complete yard work at TJ Harris Elementary

Students at Ross Collins Technical School got their hands dirty by constructing planters at TJ Harris Elementary School.

“This kind of fits hand and hand with my curriculum at Ross Collins. Dr. Blackman contacted me to work together with them on this project. We cut and prep the material in our shop. We brought it out here today and we wanted to get these guys hands-on experience on an actual construction site here at the campus and we’re assembling all the planters here,” said Eric Pickard, carpentry instructor.

Students that constructed this project are helping elementary students with gardening and hope they will learn a lesson from this.

“It teaches them the responsibility on how to maintain a garden and grow one for themselves, so they don’t have to depend on others,” said Aaliyah James, student.

After this project is complete students then will participate in some entrepreneurship.

“We’ll hold a farmers market here on campus. Our project incorporates all of our curricula from our E-L-A to our math and to our science and also to our social studies.” Our kids have researched the vegetables. They have studied the life cycle of their vegetables, they have measured the planters,” said Dr. Jeffery Blackman, TJ Harris principal.
