Great American Smoke Out Says Commit to Quit

Today, The Cardiovascular Institute of The South celebrated a nationwide event, “The Great American Smoke Out”.

The Cardiovascular Institute of The South holds an event to help the citizens of Meridian eliminate their tobacco use.

An all-day tobacco cessation event urging the community to commit to quit, bringing more awareness to the dangers of smoking

“Today across the county Its great American smoke out, that is a national day where we really want to encourage our smokers to make that first step in quitting, any day is a good day to quit, but we really want to pick a day where we put an emphasis on that”, said Melissa Mitchell, Practice Administrator of The Cardiovascular Institute of The South in Meridian.

“My greeters have on their commit to quit t-shirts just to bring recognition and they will ask them if they are a smoker, would they be interested in learning more about our smoking cessation program”, said Mitchell.

The "Commit To Quit" program will put patients in touch with a counselor that will educate and support them on their journey to a smoke free life.

“We know that there’s a direct correlation between cigarette smoking and lung cancer and other types of cancer’s also a correlation, between cigarette smoking and cardiovascular disease. So, it’s just really an opportunity for us to place an emphasis on that and really support our patients”, said Mitchell.

“We know if we can help people to quit smoking, that really helps to get them on the road to better health and not only at be cardiovascular health, but lung health”, said Mitchell.
