Today in Lauderdale County, Meridian’s first drive-thru testing site for COVID-19 was opened to test residents for the virus from their vehicles.
The testing site located at the old Sears Auto Center at the Bonita Lakes Mall was open, only for today from 9am to 4pm and anyone that is a Mississippi resident was able to get tested at the Meridian drive-thru testing site.
To be tested, first-- residents needed to be screened via phone by the University of Mississippi Medical Center and then given an appointment, before heading to the testing site.
Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency Director, Odie Barrett, tells Twin States that although the drive thru testing site was only open for today, they hope to have another set up for a longer period of time, soon.
“Well, the biggest thing right now –is trying to get the supplies and the PPE that we need to do these test sites, it takes an awful lot of PPE and we’re having a shortage of that, you know, not just here, but nationwide. So, we would love to see in the near future, something like this come, that would be set up for a longer period of time”, Odie Barrett, LEMA Director.
Also sharing that LEMA has a hotline set up, to still help those within Lauderdale County looking to get tested, if they are showing symptoms of COVID-19.
“We have put together a call center that everyone can call for here, and that number is 601-474-3775, and then you will speak to a physician and talk to them and if they feel like there’s a need for you to get tested they will set up an appointment for you to go to one of the clinics and get tested there, so that’s what we’re doing here locally, trying to get as many people tested that need to be tested”, said Barrett.
All residents that were tested for COVID-19 at the drive thru testing site, today, will be contacted by UMCC and receive their results.
