Possible Scams To Be Aware Of During The COVID-19 Pandemic

Updated: Apr 11

Tonight, Mississippi Power is warning customers to be aware of scammers during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has offered tips on how to spot a scammer.

Some scammers may call pretending to be Mississippi Power, demanding for bill payment over the phone.

On March 14th, Mississippi Power made an announcement stating that the company was suspending customer disconnects during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a recent press release from the company, Security Investigator Chris Loposser said “Mississippi Power will never ask for your banking information or a credit card or pre-paid debit card number over the phone or in person at your residence” --and “That scammers try different approaches, but they typically claim your bill is overdue and threaten to disconnect power if immediate payment isn’t made over the phone.”

If you are contacted by one of these scammers in person or over the phone, Mississippi Power advises that you do not provide them with your account number or any personal or financial information, immediately call the police, and call Mississippi Power.

According to the company, any employee sent for a service-related visit will be wearing a Mississippi Power uniform and arrive in a vehicle marked with the company logo.
