EMCC Student Lands Internship with Kansas City Chiefs
Updated: May 28
East Mississippi Community College Student, Payton Smith, landed a paid summer internship working at the training camp for the Kansas City Chiefs, the 2020 Superbowl Champions.
Smith is assigned to help care for the football field at Missouri Western State University where the Chiefs conduct summer training camps.
“I’m over two fields, says Smith. “I usually mow and do a little irrigation work. We had a couple leaky irrigation heads out so I fixed them and right now it’s kind of slow, but it should pick up in the next week, we’ll really get after it.”
Smith was fortunate to grab the internship very quickly.
“I work for the grounds field at Mississippi State, pretty much what I’m doing here, taking care of all of their athletic buildings. My boss hooked me up with this internship. I think he knew the superintendent here.”
Smith started his internship in May and will work until the middle of August. In the midst of COVID-19, he is working past the pressure of the pandemic.
“This is kind of a different year with the virus going on. I guess I got here at the best time possible with circumstances because it was a week after I got here and things were starting to open up again. The first everything was still shut down here, whenever I left Mississippi everything was still open.”
Smith says he looks forward to meeting the team when the training camp initially starts.
