Today is the first day recently appointed chief of police, Chris Read, will be serving in his new leadership role with the Meridian Police Department.

Chris Read’s appointment as police chief was confirmed with a 4 to 1 vote by the Meridian city council at council meeting on Tuesday, October 20.

Meridian mayor, Percy Bland, shared that he was glad they were able to successfully fill the full-time police chief position.

“We’re very glad to move forward with a permanent police chief. Of course, Chris Read has been with the city of Meridian for a long time, with the department for a long time. You, know we fell like he’s going to bring a lot of energy and do a great job for us as chief and so we just look forward to his leadership and everyone at the police department together being accountable for their job role and working with the community to keep our citizens safe,” said Percy Bland.

Read, a veteran law enforcement officer with MPD began working with the department in 1999 and was awarded police office of the year in 2004, and has also served as a task force officer with the FBI. He shared that he is excited to take on this new leadership role with the department.

“I’m definitely excited about this because I have an active hand in moving this department forward and also establishing the public’s confidence back in the department,” Chris Read, newly appointed chief of police.

Read also stated that he plans to utilize his first day on the job to reach out to community leaders, to reinforce their confidence in the police department.

“I’m going to reach out to the community leaders, and I want the community leader to contact me. I have an open door. I want them to contact me to come in sit down to discuss some things. I will go to them. I’m a big believer in having a group of people that are like-minded, believe in the same thing,” said Read.

Newly appointed chief of police Chris Read will be serving as Meridian’s first full time chief of police since late January.
